Topic > Divergence and inner struggle - 1102

In Divergent by Veronica Roth many characters struggle to know who they really are and when they discover the answer they often do so at a high cost. Beatrice Prior, who later changes her name to Tris, is the protagonist of the story and struggles the most to discover who she really is. She is a strong, caring, and courageous young woman who is forced to choose whether to continue living with her family in a faction driven by altruism or move to a new faction driven by courage. He is almost unable to make his choice because he got multiple results from his aptitude test, commonly referred to as divergent. She faces many challenges and adversities throughout the book, but each one helps her learn a little more about herself. At the end of the book Tris discovers who she is and what she believes, but every time she learns more about herself she pays a great price. At the beginning of the book it is very obvious that Tris doesn't know who she really is, which causes her to panic before the aptitude test. Her fear is shown in the quote: “I could tell him that I have been worried for weeks about what the aptitude test will tell me: Self-Denial, Candor, Erudite, Friendship, or Dauntless.” (Roth, age 5) Tris doesn't know who she is or even who she wants to be, which scares her. Her fear is that she will not be able to complete the initiation for her faction and will become an outcast, which is similar to being homeless but on a more severe level. More pressure is placed on her when the aptitude test gives her the chance to be three of the five factions. The test shows that his divergence puts his life in danger unless he can keep it a secret from everyone else. However, it also gives her the opportunity to stay with her current faction or leave...half of the paper...d by the mind-controlled soldiers. While they hide, Tris asks how her mother knows about the Divergents and she replies, "I know them because I'm one of them." (Roth, 441) Shortly after this conversation, his mother is killed so that he can escape with his new information and save the rest of his family. Until the end of the book Tris didn't realize that she could belong to more than one faction and tried to be something she wasn't. This internal conflict left her unable to save her friends and family from being shot in front of her. Her mother, father and even a friend died so that she could discover who she really is and thus save hundreds of lives. Tris started out as a confused, scared, and ignorant girl, but has transformed into a compassionate, strong, and courageous person. Tris has learned who she really is and what she believes in, but only at a great cost - other people's lives.
