The major components of the human cardiovascular system include the heart and blood vessels. The heart beats to pump blood into the vessels that are responsible for circulating it in cellular tissue throughout the body. During the process of homeostasis, the circulatory system supplies oxygen and nutrients to the cell while removing waste products from tissue fluid, such as carbon dioxide within the lungs. This process is necessary for cellular function. Each heartbeat is called a cardiac cycle. When the heart beats, the atria contract simultaneously followed by the ventricles contracting simultaneously, this process is known as systole. The resting phase of the four chambers between beats is called diastole. On average, the heart rate of a healthy adult is 70 beats per minute with an average resting heart rate of 60-80 BPM.
