Many scenarios showed groups racialized in different ways, including Asians/Asian Americans. The Chinese Exclusion Act created a racialized group where Chinese people could not come to the United States. The quota system significantly reduced European immigration, and all East Asian immigration was banned by the National Origins Act. These Asians were judged on screen based on their nationality through stereotypes. From the threat of white wages and living standards, Asians began to be racialized through on-screen and off-screen stereotypes. Madame Butterfly shows the cultural differences and some characteristics that Americans had towards Japan and Asians. The theme of these early films is that a Japanese woman or man always suffers betrayal, and it is always the woman, Japanese or American, who dies. Many of the films starring Japanese people ended in violence or suicide, including Madame Butterfly. The Japanese woman ended up committing suicide due to a social issue between her and Pinkerton.
