Obesity in the United States has been increasingly cited as a major health problem. Results from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey show that the percentage of obese adults more than doubled, from 15 percent in 1971-1974 to 34 percent in 2003-2006 for adults ages 20 to 74. less than 15% of the population in most US states, however, in 2010, 36 states had obesity rates of 25% or greater, and 12 of these states had obesity of 30% or greater (CDCP 2012). Cutler et al. (2006) suggested that the increase in food consumption caused by falling food costs is the main cause of the increase in obesity since 1980.
