Royalty is no longer a characteristic that belongs only to a monarch. In The Prince, Machiavelli targets the prince and all the other royals, but today his work can be used as a social critique of upper-class society. So a popular TV show depicting Manhattan's elite ruled by social media explosions is no coincidence. It is clear that the creators of the popular television show Gossip Girl had Machiavelli in mind. Machiavelli and Gossip Girl as a whole complement each other in their focus on man's lack of morals and their ability to create paranoia and persuade others to follow their lead. Human nature is greedy and selfish. At least that's what Machiavelli could have said. The television show Gossip Girl plays on this imperfection of man, revealing the scandals of New York City royalty. “I'm Gossip Girl, your one and only source for information on the scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite” (“Pilot” 1.1). Each character is solely concerned with their own actions, and Gossip Girl's character feeds off all of her drama. The characters rarely care who they manipulate to get what they want, which ultimately demonstrates a tremendous amount of immoral behavior. Making others see the flaws of Manhattan's elite through this immoral behavior evokes feelings of vanity. This lifts up ordinary people by making them feel that they have a higher level of integrity than this elite group. There is always a scandal that the elite participates in that would never even apply to ordinary people, making the fall of the elite even more burdensome: "One thing about being on top of the world is that it gives you a long, long way to fall" ("In the realm of the low" 2.14). On the other hand, competition is created in the elite world,...... in the center of the card... to be a loved and powerful piece. today. Thinking about Machiavelli in a modern setting gave me a better understanding of his relevance today. I certainly had difficulty putting the task together, and only after completing my article did I understand Machiavelli in a new light. My thesis defense made me draw new connections between Gossip Girl and The Prince. Now, when I watch one of my favorite television shows, I see Machiavelli in every episode, whether in princely characters like Blair, or seeing Machiavelli in Gossip.
