Topic > Reducing overweight and obesity among children

Aspect of violence and abuse Neglect is the area of violence that I have chosen to address. Compared to other forms of child abuse, the prevalence of neglect is higher (McSherry, 2007; Leeb, Lewis, & Zolotor, 2011), exceeding 70% in 2008, nationwide (Johnson-Reid, Drake, & Zhou, 2012 ). However, on the surface, there appears to be a consciousness that moves away from the broad forms associated with abandonment and focuses on the concrete and heinous behaviors of physical and sexual child abuse. It can be argued that the apparent apprehension in addressing child neglect and focusing on physical and sexual abuse is due to differences in who is responsible for some forms of neglect (McSherry, 2007). For example, parents, particularly those with lower incomes, of overweight and obese children may be thought to neglect their children from consuming nutritional foods. However, limited geographic access to healthy food markets, education, and financial means may impede the feasibility of obtaining healthy foods. According to Swenson and Chaffin (2006), the broader environment is a facilitating factor in reducing child abuse and neglect. In this scenario, limited access and financial capacity provide an argument for a failure of the environment and all that it encompasses (e.g., local governments, legislative officials, product retailers, food and residents). Theoretical positionThere are many theories that could be applied in evaluating this public health problem such as social learning theory and social exchange theory; however, the theoretical position I approached came from the person's perspective in environmental terms, arguing that the environment is influential...... middle of paper......
