Topic > We need tougher penalties for drunk driving - 981

Today, drunk driving has become the deadliest crime in America. In 2008 there were more than 11,000 deaths due to alcohol problems, unfortunately these deaths would have been preventable if we had stricter laws against this problem. Drivers are well aware of the laws and consequences against drunk driving, especially after destroying families due to their careless decision. The entire life of the victims' families is ruined due to the sudden death of their loved one and they will never be able to get their normal life back, while the criminals, after a few days in prison, get their normal life back. Because of our fragile criminal justice system, everyday road users share the road with repeat offenders who are highly resistant to changing their behavior despite prior sanctions, treatment or education. In my opinion, those who cause the death of another person while driving while intoxicated should receive a mandatory prison sentence of twenty-five years without the possibility of parole. In the United States there are many anti-drunk driving organizations with a common goal; prevent alcohol-related road accidents. These organizations initiate outreach efforts in communities by educating the public about the risks of drunk driving and the punishment for committing a crime. Furthermore, advertising campaigns in newspapers, magazines and television send strong messages to road users not to drive while intoxicated because it is a crime. Most billboards show statistics and photos of fatal accidents caused by drunk drivers. Schools are making sure all students are well aware of the dangers of drink driving and the laws against it. They are increasing visits to hospitals and visits to the families of victims with... middle of document... ...are the laws and the consequences of their negligent decision which causes the death of innocent road users. The entire lives of the victims' families are destroyed due to the sudden death of their loved ones, who could never regain their normal happy life; on the other hand, most criminals recover their normal lives after a few weeks in prison. Drunk drivers who drive with a high blood alcohol concentration and who are repeat offenders are very resistant to changing their behavior despite previous sanctions, treatment or education and pose a great threat to the public. Those families who have lost their loved ones at the hands of drunk drivers have every reason to demand tough laws on drunk driving, which will save innocent lives in the future. Killers of drunk drivers should serve a prison sentence like any serial killer or rapist.
