Beloved written by Toni Morrison is set in the 1870s and is about a young woman named Sethe who was born into slavery but escaped to Ohio. Once she reaches Ohio she finally feels free; however, 18 years later, he painfully realizes how false this fact is. She is constantly haunted by the past memory of her old home, Sweet Home, where her breast milk was stolen; she was exploited and then beaten horribly. In her current home in Ohio, Sethe is haunted by the ghost of her baby. Sethe was unable to name her baby before her death, yet it was Sethe who took his life. Sethe is determined to keep her children away from "The School Teacher", who tortured her during her time at Sweet Home. Once she learns that the school teacher was in Ohio to take her and her children back to Sweet Home, she runs into the shed with her children, hits her two children in the head with a shovel, cuts one of her daughters in the throat . and then proceeds to swing the smaller girl around to break her neck.
