Since we all know that America was not shaped overnight, there have – in fact – been some instances in history that have radically determined the shape of our great country. Many things will surely come to mind if you think about it long enough. The Revolutionary War might come to mind first. Then civil war could come. Maybe the Constitution, or the Founding Fathers? While all of these factors were detrimental to the formation of America, there is yet another part of history that has affected our country today. This would be the War of 1812. While many consider it simply a great victory over the English in the climactic finale that is the Battle of New Orleans, the significance lies far beyond the red, white and blue patriotic stories. The War of 1812 redefined our nation's status in the world, bringing it into the great blessed land of freedom. Logically; However, if we want to understand why the war changed America, we must first examine the war itself, the reasons behind it, the outcome, and the meaning of it all. If America had not won, or even declared, war, we would be living in a completely different world today. If you ask a common citizen about the War of 1812, you might hear how he won the epic and courageous Battle of New Orleans. war, but then the common citizen would be wrong. History tells us that the war actually ended two weeks before the famous battle. The reason why this happens will be revealed later. Before the official start of the war, America was ruled by President James Madison. He ushered in early republicanism with his views and practices. This finally ended the war with Great Britain. The War of 1812 played many key factors in the formation of our nation. This was the second time the young nation had faced the most powerful country in the world. Outnumbered in ships, ammunition, men, supplies, and finances, our militia joined the army and came face to face with the British, and twice prevailed. The war was considered the "Second American Revolutionary War," and it certainly was. The surrounding nations were horrified by America's audacity, and even more by their triumph. Because of the War of 1812-1815, the United States of America had earned a position – however small – of power, influence, and respect in the realm of the world. The war strengthened our country, which ultimately led to our great nation today.
