When I think of writing in traditional Gothic style, I imagine dark, disturbing, and brooding situations. Most traditional gothic writing can make your heart beat a little faster and give you chilling goosebumps. However, I have the feeling that when I read Edgar Allen Poe's writings the "gothic" theme is taken to the next level giving a petrifying suspicion. Poe surpasses ordinary, traditional writing by including symbolism within the words, mysteries with hidden meanings, and conditions that are more dramatic and terrifying than normal. David Galloway states: “Poe was a master of the intensity of imagery, capable of building with essentially 'Gothic' materials. But Poe attempted to go beyond the popular Gothic tradition and deplored the harlotry use of terror and the grotesque.” I believe that the variety of Poe's works not only met the demands of the market, but was also an expression of Poe's thoughts on life in a deeper meaning.
