“The media is a powerful presence in people's lives. In the field of communication, media is the term used to refer to the particular medium used to convey a message to a large, anonymous and diverse audience” (Pearce, 2009). “The media, as a powerful social system, plays an important role in creating a person's sense of reality” (Gergen, 1999). According to Erna Sulaiman, deputy senior legal counsel of the Attorney General's Department, "[the media] includes content that threatens the security of the country, conflicts with race and religion, and immoral content." The Brunei government should raise awareness – through the education system – of media consumption in Brunei society, where people have come to the point of having completely discarded their own culture. Ultimately, this awareness will never eliminate the media's effect on our society and culture, but it can help diminish the threats the media can pose to our local culture..
