When deciding which topic to cover between three different religions, I wanted to know more about one thing, God. Besides Christianity, the other two religions I will compare and contrast are Islam and Buddhism. The similarities between Islam and Christian teaching are many but the differences are important. Buddhist teachings offer the greatest distinction between the other two and it will be interesting to contrast them. In Christianity, God is an eternal being. He created the universe and everything in it. It is both transcendent and immanent. One of the most important visions of God is the Trinity. The most popular way to explain this doctrine is “one God in three persons.” These three persons are God, the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit. They are all distinct but the same. The Bible describes several attributes that define what the Christian God is like. First of all, he is omniscient. He knows everything and His knowledge is complete. Second, he is omnipotent, meaning he can accomplish anything he chooses. It is also omnipresent or present in all places and all times. It is immutable, possessing the same attributes before and after creation. God is holy. He cannot accept or consider sin. Because of his holiness, he is right. God is sovereign over all creation. This frees Him to do what He knows is best for His people. God is love. God is merciful. He bestows grace on His people. The God of Islam (Allah), some believe, is the same God as Christianity. They have some of the same characteristics but one that is distinct. Allah is an omnipotent and omniscient creator, sustainer, orderer and judge of the universe. Unlike the God of Christianity, Allah is singular. There is no "one in three... middle of paper... definitely not an adherent." Even one or more of the personal gods do not appear to be an important part of the religion. Both Islam and Christianity thrive on the knowledge that there is a God who created all man for the purpose of praising him. Buddhism is only interested in the end of suffering. They only see an end through human means. Christianity sees the end through Jesus and Islam only through God. Through research, I appreciate being a Christian. I like knowing that God has an interest in my life and I am never alone. It also shows me how much He cares and loves His creation through sending Jesus to die for our sins. Islam is a more rules-based religion, and while laws are important, they can become oppressive. Buddhism means that the only way to truly improve yourself is through yourself. Human beings have fallen and it is impossible to do so completely.
