The argument from design or the teleological argument points to the existence of an order and direction in nature towards a kind of purpose. The argument essentially proves the existence of God. A designer must exist because the universe and living things show signs of design in their complexity. Design arguments are not problematic when they are based on things that nature clearly could not or would not produce, such as human artifacts. If the designs imply a designer and the universe shows signs of design, then the universe has been created. An intelligent designer is an entity that, according to the intelligent design movement, has played a role in the development of life. Essentially, the claim being made is that certain aspects of the universe are too perfectly organized not to have come about because of a supernatural being called God. The argument from Intelligent Design is the most recent formulation of the teleological argument. “Proponents point out that, although we cannot know that something was not designed, we can detect design in systems whose functions are irreducibly complex” (Peterson 108). These systems are single systems where each has parts that contribute to the basic function. Therefore, removing any of these parts would cause the system to stop working. Over time these systems produce a better result than either part would have produced separately. This theory also disputes that the process of natural selection is sufficient to explain the complexity of living organisms. The theory states that complexity must arise from the work of an intelligent designer. A well-known analogy of the teleological argument is the watchmaker's argument, known by William Paley. The argument states that if a clock were to be found in an empty field, or...... in the center of the card ......m. The universe could easily have been designed for the purpose of something else and humans would be irrelevant. Another counterargument to the design argument is evolutionary theory or Darwinism. This theory explains the appearance of biological design in nature (Himma). Scientists have demonstrated that the chemical origin of life is compatible with some natural laws. Scientists have also explained the mechanisms by which life developed from simple to complex and how it continues to develop. The most important factor is that blind chance is not the only alternative to divine design; it is instead the cumulative process of natural selection. Therefore, evolutionary theory provides a much more convincing explanation than the design argument because science provides a workable and testable explanation of how complexity arises from simplicity..
