The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a novel about a woman, named Hester Prynne, who is ostracized and chastised as a sinner for committing adultery. Hester Prynne will not reveal Pearl's father, which brings her even more chastisement in her town and in herself. Hester Prynne is a character that readers generally sympathize with because within herself she feels the need to protect all those who have done harm, which earned her a public punishment of being on the gallows for three hours. On the other hand, Reverend Master Dimmesdale, Pearl's father, is one of the trespassers protected by Hester Prynne and the town. Various readers seem to sympathize with Dimmesdale's personality, but his personality should not be taken lightly. The Reverend Master Dimmesdale is not a character who should be sympathized as his true personality shows otherwise. Without a doubt, people generally sympathize with Reverend Master Dimmesdale simply considering his reputation within his city. Everyone in town thinks highly of Reverend Master Dimmesdale because they admire his devout and respectful youth. «His eloquence and his religious fervor had already given him the title of high eminence in his profession» (61). This quote can be interpreted as if the Reverend Master Dimmesdale had such eloquence and great feeling of warmth that gives a high status to his profession. This quote can also be explained as Nathaniel Hawthorne was trying to get the reader to sympathize with Reverend Master Dimmesdale. The words he used to describe him were strong and powerful words that convinced people to think well of him. It has such a mental effect on the inhabitants of the city, that they speak in terms of how they believe they would mentally react to certain situations.......middle of paper......and the sympathy of the individuals giving a dying speech, not he should never have silenced the person who always protected him. It simply shows why the Reverend Master Dimmesdale should not be sympathised. However, Reverend Master Dimmesdale was never someone an individual should sympathize with in the beginning, as his true personality shows his manipulation, cowardly ways, and evil heart. He is divided within himself, trapped by his society, and constantly disowns Hester, which brings out these qualities in his personality. If Reverend Master Dimmesdale had ever revealed his sin early in the novel, such as in the scene where Hester Prynne was publicly punished, many people would not sympathize with him. If individuals sympathized with him, it would simply demonstrate the double standards used in modern and even past societies.
