The representation of the concepts of assimilation and marginality has the white Anglo-Saxon Protestant at its centre; while minorities are inside the sheet and the outside of the sheet represents the power and influence of different ethnic groups. The speaker enjoys spending time with his father. When his father came home from work, the boy and his father would waltz; however, the father smelled of whiskey. As the speaker and his father continue to dance, the speaker notices bruises on his father's knuckles.
