Many were aware of the plausible consequences of the incident and found themselves facing a severe test that conflicted with their moral values. In the case of an authority figure, many choose to place a higher value on their self-image and the perception of others. As a result, many give up their moral decision and falsely create a portrait of an assistant who does not deserve responsibility for the events that occurred. A plausible argument to free participants from any blame is the experimenter's agreement to accept responsibility and lack of scientific expertise or knowledge. But as illustrated by Milgrim and Burger, these individuals do not deserve to be absolved due to their involvement in carrying out the project
