Topic > The diversity of healthcare personnel - 1011

Healthcare personnel suffer severely due to their lack of diversity. As healthcare organizations grow and the number of patients increases, so does patient diversity. There are more minority patients and the number of minorities is increasing in the United States. The need for minority employees is crucial as they are needed to help care for patients who have similar cultural, racial, and ethnic upbringings. There are many barriers in healthcare workforce that prevent minorities from reaching their full potential to become healthcare employees, especially higher-level leadership positions; as patients continue to become more diverse, so too do employee needs. Minority employment in healthcare organizations has increased, but an increase in leadership and management positions is lacking. The positions that received increases are lower-level positions in the hospital, such as janitors and cooks, which are still very important, but do not play a role in leadership and management. These positions do not require an educational or leadership background. The problem healthcare management faces is the lack of diversity in leadership: there are very few minorities holding positions of chief executive officers (CEOs), health services managers and healthcare support employees. The percentage of CEOs is 11.7%, health services executives account for 21.5%, and 43.6% of health support employees are a minority. In contrast, 62.3% of minorities hold positions as waitresses and cleaners, a higher percentage than any other position (Gabor 2008). To change these percentages, minorities must become more involved in the healthcare industry and leadership receiving degrees… middle of paper… should be more open minded when creating an application pool for job seekers. They should make the application and hiring process less biased and discriminatory so that minorities have a greater opportunity to obtain jobs in healthcare leadership and management. To prevent employers from believing social stereotypes, they need to inquire about the backgrounds of other races and ethnicities to have a better understanding of them and their beliefs. As the diversity of the United States population continues to increase, the demand for diversity in healthcare is constantly increasing. It is critical that healthcare organizations add diversity to their workforce to help make patients more comfortable when seeking medical care. Barriers to recruiting minority employees should be broken down for the benefit of both healthcare organizations and their patients.
