Analysis of the novel – Fledgling by Octavia ButlerIntroduction. The novel follows the story of Shori Matthews, a 53-year-old vampire with the special ability to last longer in the sun than her vampire relatives due to his dark skin. Shortly after waking up, Shori meets a construction worker named Wright Hamlin who helps her along the way. A human woman named Brook became another important helper and source for Shori, who in turn aided her and another young woman named Celia, a darker-skinned individual like Shori, but fully human. There was also another character who had little physical presence, but still had an impact on the entire story. She was a middle-aged woman named Theodora Harden, and she was also adored by Shori. This story is set in modern-day Washington state. There is a sense of connection despite the fantastical elements incorporated into the story. The story takes us through several small towns in Washington for most of the book, and also travels south to a small town in California. The book doesn't fail to incorporate familiar things like mentions of Seattle or Los Angeles, building a fictional community near non-fictional areas. Octavia Butler does a good job of maintaining enough realism to make the story seem not as far-fetched as stories of magical kingdoms and beings, but creatures that could potentially exist and live among us. The main conflict associated with the story of "Fledgling" is the ongoing struggle of the young vampire Shori Matthews to regain the memories lost in an accident that occurred at her home in a fairly large community that was on the verge of achieving new insights. Shori gets along with the broken remnants of her memory with Wright, Brook and Celia i... middle of paper... subtly for Shori. The novel is written in first-person perspective from Shori's point of view. He gathers most of his information from the male members of his family and other male Ina communities and also makes reference to the fact that he has little contact with the female Ina throughout the story until the end of the book. Finally there is the shadow, which in Shori's case is her unconscious and primordial state. When she is in great pain and in need of intense healing, she loses control of herself and attacks and consumes the living creature closest to her as a means of helping it recover. This is shown at the beginning of the novel when it is learned that he had eaten a human while faced with weakness, and the conscious self feels a sense of remorse. Shori Matthews is a dynamic character who displays different archetypes in one way or another, with strength or weakness.
