Introduction I chose to focus on nutrition in the KwaNyuswa community for my research assignment. The KwaNyuswa community is an IsiZulu speaking community located in the Valley of a Thousand Hills (see map overleaf). It is a peri-urban settlement located on the outskirts of Hillcrest. This community would have originated as a result of apartheid, a system established by the National Party government based on racial segregation in South Africa. Apartheid occurred from 1948 to 1994. During this time, people of color were discriminated against. The government enforced many laws to divide white people and black people and one of them prevented black people and white people from living together. People of color were forced to move to the outskirts of cities. This has forced people of color to live in marginal conditions and likely with little access to services. My objective is to determine whether or not the people of the KwaNyuswa Valley of 1000 Hills community have adequate food intake to meet acceptable good nutrition standards. In order to obtain the information needed to assess their dietary intake, primary research will be conducted in the community. A questionnaire was drawn up to ask residents questions related to my purpose. For example, determine how much food they consume per day, how many times per day they eat certain products such as proteins, dairy products, fruits and vegetables, and where they get most of their food. Using this information I will be able to determine whether or not people in the KwaNyuswa community consume foods with good nutritional value. I will then be able to prove or disprove my hypothesis according to which people… personal and motivation to adopt a healthy lifestyle. The information extracted from the website is reliable as it is written by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This is perhaps one of the biggest concerns in the KwaNyuswa community. Many of the circumstances I have described apply to South Africa because it is a third world country. There are many areas in South Africa that are similar or the same as the KwaNyuswa community. This makes my study more applicable because it can be used in other areas with similar situations. This test will help compare the foods that people in the KwaNyuswa community consume with the foods they should consume.
