In the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson stated that "all men are created equal [...] with certain unalienable rights, which among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness." which have become fundamental principles of our modern society (80). However, it could be argued that the Declaration of Independence promoted neither equality nor justice among mankind, because both before and after the American Revolution slaves and women did not have the same rights as men. However, Jefferson's Declaration of Independence may have influenced Douglass's pursuit of justice in terms of his commitment to human rights and equality. Frederick Douglass conveys his personal experiences of unjust discrimination against slaves in his Tale. A vivid example of this unjust discrimination is the fact that Douglass had to obey the will of his master and his mistress and the fact that they had complete control over his life.
