Technology is What You Make It The articles "How Computers Change the Way We Think" by Sherry Turkle and "Electronic Intimacy" by Christine Rosen argue that technology is rather harmful to society as a whole and which, although it can sometimes be useful, is more harmful. I have to agree and disagree with this because it really just depends on how it is used and can harm or help the user. Progressive changes in technology, such as social media, can both push us, as a society, ever closer to and from others and personal connections because it has become a tool that can be manipulated to help or harm our relationships and us as human beings who are capable of more with and without technology. Technology Makes Things Better Calculators, computers, appliances, and many other things were created to help us. “The tools we use to think change the way we think” (Turkle). This point was made by Sherry Turkle in her article and it is true, in a way. Computers do things for us and for us, this is also true. Some people like to blame technology for many things and they may be right or wrong about that. “Technology does not determine change, but pushes us to take certain directions” (Turkle). Calculators, for example, are just a tool, and people will blame them when the answer they get is wrong. But they are wrong, since calculators are just a tool, it means that they are the ones who are wrong. If they had done it by hand, there is a 99% chance they would have gotten it wrong. Some people think faster than they can write or write, but if you write fast, you may be faster on a computer and keep up with your thoughts and it will still always be readable unlike paper which you will most likely have had some trouble trying to find. to keep up with your thoughts. We live in a world where simulation can be used for pretty much anything which can sometimes be considered a bad thing, but honestly it's a necessity for a lot of things because it's useful. Computer simulations can help doctors train and learn to diagnose patients. Simulations are or can be used in so many things like education, science, entertainment, etc. and they are usually beneficial to us because they enable us to do more things that we would never have been able to do without technology. Technology seems to be moving too fast and perhaps we should mourn what we are leaving behind. But even people who like to remember the past can be left behind. Sometimes it's important to stop living in the past and improve your future. The articles “How Computers Change the Way We Think” and “Electronic Intimacy” both made amazing arguments, but as I said, it all depends on how the technology is used. Technology seems to have the power to push us further or closer to each other, but in the end it's just another tool
