Student Loans are a Cancer. Once diagnosed, they have the ability to consume your entire life. Of course, there is a "cure", however it involves a long list of unavoidable sacrifices and, if not implemented, will be paralyzing. It will spread into every part of your being, taking away your freedoms and abilities, only making it more impossible to make ends meet. While cancer is not fair, nor forgiving, there are differences between it and student loans, cancer kills, student loans leave you suffering. But after comparing the two, you have to ask yourself: Has anyone ever made a sacrifice without the thought of profit lingering in their mind? Whether it's money, experience, title, or even freedom, the answer is probably “no.” It is always in their best interest. After hearing this, while conversely being brainwashed to believe that the government is helping Americans, it makes me sick. Matt Taibbi, an American author and reporter, shares a common sentiment. In his article “Ripping Off Young America: The College-Loan Scandal” he expresses his hatred and disgust for modern America and how it “sucks the blood from its young people” (Taibbi 3). He believes colleges and universities benefit from low- and middle-income students. They have a tendency to depend on loans guaranteed by the federal government, funding a “massive and ongoing government subsidy” (Taibbi 3). The sad truth is that Obama is in charge of everything. After revamping the student loan industry, the government began lending money directly to students. This “prevented” the middleman from taking a cut. However, instead of actually getting rid of the middlemen, the government began taking over their efforts. The President's plan was inevitably... middle of paper... has long served as a vital pathway for students of modest means and those who are the first in their families to attend college." (Wang 1) Without help those in need, public universities no longer serve their purpose and should not receive the funding they do. It's not fair to people who really want to better their future, not be a star on a third division football team. The federal government claims they are "helping" America's youth by funding our college expenses, but in reality they are launching napalm attacks on us that will spread until they engulf our entire generation like a Vietnam slum, depriving our opportunity and freedom, putting each of us up to our necks in massive amounts of student loan debt How can our leaders be so ignorant about the sustainability of our nation's future generations, all for little money.
