The American education system was built to educate the nation's children, and has done so for years, but there is an inequality that forms within the system that provides children with different paths and leads to different ends. Some students attend schools with good facilities, up-to-date resources such as books from the current decade, heating and ceilings that don't crumble, and no bomb threats on a weekly basis. These students often receive a better education and are adequately prepared for life, while students who attend schools without the aforementioned characteristics are often less prepared. What can be done to correct this inequality? This article will briefly describe the problem of American educational structure focusing on inequality based on; socioeconomic class, race and ethnicity, and violence/bullying, while discussing the harmful outcomes of the problem and finally discussing three solutions that could help solve the problems and make a great education an option for all students. The American education system has the potential to create high-level thinkers, and often does, but some students don't have the opportunity to become high-level thinkers because that path is hindered by things like socioeconomic status, racial disparities and ethnic and violence in schools. Socioeconomic status is a determining factor in which school a student attends and how well a student is able to advance (Leon-Guerrero 2013, 207). Students whose families earn a high income typically live in neighborhoods where the school is renovating and hiring new teachers, while their less affluent peers live in neighborhoods where the school is falling apart structurally are losing qualified teachers due to budget...... middle of paper... counselors would help work through any anger issues and/or other emotional issues, while parents would act as reinforcers. Guerrero writes that “the most effective school anti-violence programs are those that include parental involvement,” so it is clear that parental support for the initiative is a key factor in this initiative becoming widespread. Furthermore, if this were a nationwide program, the support would likely be immense and would allow the program to run more efficiently. This won't stop bullying, but it can reduce it and, more importantly, help those suffering from bullying deal with their problems with the support of others. This would take a lot of organization and the use of multiple counselors to pull off, but it seems like a plan that would work to stop the disparities caused by bullying and harassment in school systems..
