Flaw-detector Leonard Klady of Variety magazine expresses: "It is plain, dull and difficult, and comes with just the right monotony and sudden bursts of horror which one imagines mirror the genuine way of incarceration." (Klady, 1994) Roger Ebert, former Chicago Sun Times commentator, says: "Some have said life is a prison, we are the Reds, Andy is our savior. All great mastery is about an option that is more depth of it admits." (Ebert, 1999) These checks add up to the overall quiet and hushed voice that this film outlines the true way of life in prison and how it eats away at someone's spirit. I trust this is why Darabont created his hero as a savior character, to spare these poor souls. This movie was filmed in 1994 and this specific scene still resonates today as significant throughout today's group of people.
