Topic > Advantages and Disadvantages of Proprietary Infrastructure

Dan WeaverINFO540Assignment 51. Chapter 9 Text, Discussion Question 1 (p.352). Write a detailed response, using authoritative sources. IS organizations will no longer need to develop proprietary infrastructure; they can simply rely on the Internet. Therefore, they will once again focus primarily on application development. For some years now there has been discussion between proprietary infrastructures and cloud-based infrastructures. Today there is a huge push towards using cloud-based infrastructures, but the choice of which to use seems to be organization-specific. A proprietary infrastructure consists of physical servers or a physical host to create VMs. A company would need IT staff to manage these resources or hire a managed service provider. This solution will also require the need to upgrade hardware, renew software licenses, perform upgrades and extend warranties every five to seven years. (1) While this may seem like a lot to worry about, an organization will have some benefits that a cloud solution cannot offer. (1) Some advantages of a proprietary infrastructure are: physical control over the infrastructure, needs-specific development, security, and data maintained internally. Some disadvantages of this solution are: initial capital investment, hardware replacement every 5-7 years, and IT maintenance and support. (1)A cloud-based solution offers some unique benefits to an organization as well. Depending on the size of the organization, some small to mid-level organizations may not want to manage everything on-site. Cloud providers alleviate the headaches of cooling and housing physical servers and have their own staff to manage the hardware. (2) This allows a smaller organization to invest its capital in other areas of the business (...... middle of paper ...... new native mobile interactions (fingers instead of mouse; multi-touch gestures; pan, tilt and swivel) and technological features such as phone functions, built-in GPS and accelerometer.5 Lack of understanding of how, when, where and why the mobile application is used.(3)[1 ] " Creative Bloq."
