Cohabitants with children may avoid marriage because they are afraid of hurting their children; they want to decrease the prospect of getting hurt. Lewis believes that the decline of the male breadwinner model and the increase in female employment, along with changing family law, are what causes temporary coupledom. Dench and Lewis share the same feelings in this case. Both Dench and Lewis believe that women's participation in the economy, their desire for greater independence (individualism), and the decline of the male breadwinner model are the main causes of marriages that do not last. That said, as previously mentioned, family is still central to most people (Scott 1997). Beck & Beck-Gernsheim stated that “when we talk about the future of” the family, we often start from false premises. They compare the father-mother-child family model to a vague notion of “no family,” or assume that another type of family is replacing the nuclear family. It is much more likely… that rather than one type replacing the other there will be an enormous variety of ways of living together or apart, continuing to exist, side by side.” Lewis is of the same opinion, that of having democratic intimate relationships, and not just a conventional version of them
