Topic > Reflection on the Nurse-Client Relationship - 2093

Unfortunately, I have struggled with this specific skill. BP explained to me that, due to his drinking problem, his family had distanced themselves from him. Coming from a close-knit family, I found it difficult to accept that BP hadn't done more to help his family in their time of need. However, I didn't take into consideration that his values differed from mine or that his family was different from the one I had known. In hindsight, I would have first assessed how his individual relationships with his family have evolved over the years and how he feels he should be treated in his current situation. This could also be recognized as a failure in re-imaging (Doane & Varcoe, 2005). While I have a basic understanding of BP's current health and family life, I failed to recognize the differences that set him apart from the rest of his family or how his family might contribute to the way he chooses to live his life.
