Topic > Pros and Cons of Embryonic Stem Cell Research - 1000

Embryonic stem cells can cure almost all diseases. In the world, at this moment, there is a widespread and popular belief that research on embryonic stem cells is immoral and wrong. Research aims to find many cures for a large number of diseases including diabetes and Parkinson's disease. The problem with research is how the cells are collected. When the mother of a baby less than 10 days old miscarries, the fetus is harvested and the embryos containing the stem cells are collected for use in research. Polls show that about 85% of the United States does not support embryonic stem cell research because it harms or destroys human embryos. Embryonic stem cell research because it has the potential to cure almost any disease and save billions of lives. The positive outweighs the negative and the immorality of destroying cells for research. So, what exactly are stem cells? Stem cells are empty copies of any cell or tissue in the body. Adult stem cells are found in bone marrow and in some types of lipids in all living animals. Embryonic stem cells are harvested from the embryos of animals less than ten to thirteen days old. Today, embryonic stem cell research is one of the most controversial topics in the medical field, along with human cloning and euthanasia. Stem cells are taken from the fetus and then studied to find treatments for various diseases (Beil 1). Embryonic stem cells were first discovered in 1981 while studying adult stem cells in mice. A mouse gave birth to a stillborn baby months early. The offspring were taken to a laboratory and studied to find out why they were still born. The problem was never solved; however, scientists were examining… halfway through the paper… different presidents, conservatives are more convinced that it is immoral and evil, while liberals find it very useful in the medical field. (4) Embryonic stem cells represent one of the most controversial issues in the medical field today. Cells are considered immoral, but they are critical to our future in medicine. Cells have the potential to cure almost any disease or birth defect at an almost infinite rate. The cells will save millions on the spot because they regrow faster than any other cell and any other medicine known to man. Cells can literally be inserted into any tissue or muscle to begin healing. Cells can save billions of lives in the future and overcome the downside of where they are obtained. “Embryonic stem cell research has the potential to alleviate much suffering. Surely, by working together we can exploit its life-giving potential.” -Nancy Reagan.
