This statement is made clear in chapter twenty when it says, “Suspicion was immediately directed toward the Negroes, as always when an unexplained crime occurs he is involved in a Southern community (178). The only support for this claim is that blacks were not raised the same way as whites. How could they be, though, when any opportunity for them to better themselves as a whole has been shot down by white supremacy? The ideology of whites towards blacks in this situation is perplexing, because in essence, the fear and misunderstanding felt by the white community was largely due to issues related to their own actions, not the actions of blacks.
