The invasion of Normandy/ Adelchi PiluttiOn 6 June 1944, the fate of the Second World War was changed by a risky battle. On this day, American, Canadian and English troops stormed the beaches and fell from the sky along the coast of Normandy, France. A young book sergeant, Adelchi Pilutti, was part of the 82nd Airborne and was one of the first soldiers on the ground during the invasion of Normandy (Pilutti). Pilutti's courageous actions in Normandy helped the Allied forces achieve this strategic victory in Normandy. The invasion of Normandy by the Allied forces would not have been a success without the courageous fighting and indispensable sabotage of ground troops such as Adelchi Pilutti. World War II had been raging for five long years. The Allied forces had begun to launch a brutal offensive against the Axis power in North Africa, but General Eisenhower, general of the Allied armies, knew that this was not enough to stop the Axis beast. He knew they would have to begin an offensive movement on Hitler's famous Second Front, Normandy, France (Snyder 58-59). Eisenhower's plan was to drop men from planes behind the beach to disable communications, bridges, and any other points of interest (Snyder 58-59). Then the bombing of the beach from both sea and air would begin (Snyder 58-59). Eventually, 4,000 transports would cross the English Channel and storm the beaches of Normandy (Snyder 58-59). Nearly a million men would land on the five beaches at the southern tip of France. This operation would be the largest military operation in history; it would be so large that it was nicknamed Operation Overlord (Snyder 58-59). This operation, however, was a gamble. If it worked, the Allied forces would turn the war in their favor; if I...... middle of paper ......rmandy for thirty-four days(Pilutti).Pilutti helped make the invasion of Normandy a success. The courageous action of eliminating the German machine gun nest helped the Allied forces secure a foothold in Normandy. Without him eliminating the machine gun emplacement, the machine gun emplacement could have caused problems for the attacking allies. Pilutti also carried out strategic sabotage for the allies. Without his elimination of bridges and communications stations, the Axis forces could have mounted an effective counterattack and repelled the invading Allies. The outcome of World War II was changed on June 6, 1944. This day united many countries together in a risky battle to stop the power of the Great Axis. The battle was won thanks to the courageous war effort of ground troops such as Adelchi Pilutti. Without these efforts, the battle might have been lost and with it the war.
