“[He] should have been a pair of worn claws/Running on the bottom of silent seas” (Eliot, 73-74). This comparison is very powerful because he doubts that he can progress and constantly humbles himself. Prufrock sees himself as a crab, taking a long time to reach the destination, if at all, and having to side-step around everything. He is constantly looking for guidance, demonstrating the doubt Prufrock has that he can never be worthy enough to make a decision without guidance. He might start something or have an idea and then start wondering “and how should I assume?” (Eliot, 54) repeatedly pleads for help and guidance every time he says it. The more desperate he becomes. Prufrock does not believe he is capable of making decisions on his own without knowing the answer or end result. He asks for help to prepare for what is to come and separates himself from the rest
