Gun control is an attempt to end violent crime by strengthening laws regarding the possession of firearms. Under our Second Amendment, people have the right to “keep and bear Arms.” But the Supreme Court has recognized the exceptions to Second Amendment freedoms, as well as the fact that no right is absolute. Americans have long debated laws that would allow professors and students to carry firearms on college campuses. Do gun control laws on US college campuses reduce violence or take guns from law-abiding citizens and leave them in the hands of criminals? According to Villahermosa, “allowing firearms on campuses will create problems, not solve them.” (“Guns do not belong in the hands of administrators, professors or students” par. 1) I totally agree with Villahermosa's point of view and believe that guns bring violence. Overall, gun crimes on college campuses are a major problem in the United States today. Other experts disagree with Villahermosa's point of view. For example, in an article written by Timothy Wheeler titled “There's a Reason They Choose Schools,” the author clearly demonstrates the “success of the armed first responder.” (“There's a reason they choose schools” par. 5) According to Wheeler, schools and colleges are targets of mass shootings because of their gun-free zone policy. Overall, this is what makes colleges vulnerable to mass shootings. Based on my research, this report evaluates whether the potential risk of injury and death resulting from the latest mass shootings on college campuses across the United States should increase public interest and whether new legislative bills should be created to support arming professors or students. This report covers topics such as: What we know about violence... middle of paper... the human brain. We must ensure the safety of our students and faculty by keeping colleges free from all firearms.
