The characters' costumes were very reminiscent of the characters' personalities with a modern twist. Lady Capulet is portrayed as a rich, larger-than-life housewife and her costume reiterates this statement. She constantly wore expensive-looking shoes, clothes, and jewelry. Romeo wore jeans and a t-shirt to show that he is a relatively "normal" teenager. Juliet wore floral tops, jeans and was barefoot for much of the show, in contrast to her mother who constantly wore heels, which shows her true age. Same with Mercutio. He always wore flashy metallic clothes with a "rock star" haircut and eyeliner. The characters' costumes were modernized to fit the time period newly depicted without compromising the characters' original personalities and backgrounds. This choice was almost necessary given the modern American conception of the set; the characters could not be dressed in 15th century Italian clothing while sitting on a plastic chair. Given the nature of the play, Romeo and Juliet is an extremely adaptable play and the director took advantage of this. The contemporary American setting made the nearly 500-year-old play relatable and understandable to the typical American audience member. Overall, I found the Shakespeare Theater production of Romeo and Juliet to be very good
