This investigation seeks to evaluate the influence of Christianity on the politics of the medieval era. The relevance of this topic cannot be overlooked mainly due to its lasting impact on society. In the Middle Ages the Church served as a second social system and was therefore directly related to politics. Canon law, which was the laws of the church, was enforced by church officials within the community. This is an important example that alludes to the idea that, unlike the United States where there is a separation of church and state; the government of the medieval era was in direct association with the Christian Church. This investigation will look closely at the relationship between the Catholic Church and the royal family in the Holy Roman Empire, France and Spain during the period between the 4th and 13th centuries. This will be accomplished by examining medieval articles and primary sources relating to the Church which will be used to evaluate the research question.
