In the film Silverlining Playbook, directed by David O. Russell, Patrick Solatano who is diagnosed with bipolar disorder is released from a mental institution and teams up with Tiffany in hopes of getting back with her wife. In Perks of Being a Wallflower directed by Steven Chobsky, Charlie suffers from depression after the suicide of his best friend and PTSD due to sexual abuse by his aunt Karen at an early age. Both directors effectively depict these different mental disorders in American society by accurately depicting the symptoms of mental disorder, relating conflicts to the audience, and challenging previous negative stereotypes. (Need t/s) In the Silver Linings playbook, Patrick is diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which causes him to have manic episodes. Because in the movie Pat caught his wife in the middle of an affair and almost beat the man to death and then saw nothing wrong with almost killing the man and was upset that the wife wouldn't take him back and he couldn't understand why she was afraid of him. Over the course of the film he shows more manic episodes, such as when he finished reading a book, he threw the book out the window because he didn't like the ending and then woke up his parents and started complaining about the book. Pat has no sense of responsibility for his actions. These manic states last only a couple of minutes and then he returns to normal. Most people think that bipolar means being crazy and having violent episodes, but Pat has nonviolent manic episodes which are a common symptom of bipolar disorder. To be considered a manic episode, the mood disorder must be accompanied by at least three additional symptoms from a list that includes inflated self-esteem or grandiosity, decr......middle of paper......is going to stay well it's okay to seek help. These facilities are available to help these people overcome the worst part of their illness by placing them with others and not taking them away from their families. In conclusion, people with mental disabilities can live a normal life thanks to various treatment options and support systems. A mental disability does not have to define who a person is, there are many people who lead successful lives with these disabilities and it is possible to thrive and live a healthy life. These films help raise awareness by bringing issues to a wide audience and encouraging them to seek help. It also shows that mental illness doesn't have to derail their lives. These films do a great job of supporting those who have had to live with the stigmas that come with being diagnosed with a mental illness.
