Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, Jürgen Habermas, are all sociological theorists that postmodern theorists such as Michel Foucault, Jean Baudrillard and David Harvey all agree in defining what is called theory by Grad. The grand theory is supposed to be able to explain everything; each theorist explains an entire system. Take for example Weber who develops theories on the increase of bureaucracy and how this influenced the alienation of people; attempted to explain the increased levels of alienation. Grand theories maintain the status quo and consequently describe only one answer as correct; typically these responses are determined by those in power, for example the bourgeoisie. And those like the Proletarian, or minorities, who have no power to describe the outcome, are forced to follow the status quo. One of the criticisms of the Grand Theory is that, because it describes only one response, it describes only one narrative that of the elite. It ignores all other narratives from the rest of society. Some say that Grand Theory should be renamed Grand Narrative. Grand theory/narrative in a postmodern society would explain all narratives, of every person, regardless of their status or power in society. It will be up to the individual to decide whether they want to accept the narrative as reality or not. In a postmodern world we need to understand our social reality and the meanings behind it in our world, how we accomplish this feat through the use of language. According to the French linguist Ferdinand de Saussure, language has two components, Langue and Parole. Langue is the formal structure of the language, it is the structural dimension of the language which is composed of the concrete system of shared meanings, well defined and susceptible to study. Words is the… center of the article… an analysis primarily of socioeconomic relationships to explain social change. They are forgetting about Nature-Culture relationships. Wallerstein, Frank and Grills are too anthropocentric; they must focus on human interactions and ignore the natural reasons for contractions in the world system. Ultimately the economy is based on nature. If a natural disaster strikes and limits a nation's resources or cuts them off from their resources, the economy will fail and eventually collapse. When this happens we see a rapid contraction or extension, this is labeled a dark age. These periods of dark ages are not always harmful, in the long run, nature gets a change to recover and heal from any damage that has occurred, and decentralized cultures and the hegemon fall, as a result after the dominant culture has fallen , new cultures will flourish. over time.
