In a psychoanalytic world, Holden, the protagonist of the book "The Catcher in the Rye", by JD Salinger, is seventeen years old, struggling to face life, and living in his fantasy world, according to Donald E. Hall, professor of English and chair of the English department at West Virginia University, "human behavior is often an enigmatic thing, requiring concerted acts of inquiry to uncover root causes. and multiple effects" (Hall105). Holden refers to Hall's theory because Holden shows multiple conflicting emotions which cause confusion in Holden's character. He describes some hatred towards "fake" people, but he himself is not so honest, he says , "I AM THE most terrible liar you have ever seen in your life. It's terrible" (Salinger16). Holden's whole life is based on lies because he doesn't trust the truth in people, so he isolates himself from the rest of the people. This reflects the author, Salinger because he also believes that there are many "false" people " and should be considered "false". Isolation is one of Holden's main problems, he believes that it is better to stay away from people. He is a very impassive teenager, who does not want to get attached to anyone due to trust issues. He does because he had a tough childhood and most of his thoughts became unconscious. According to Freud's theory, "The unconscious state- reveals the protagonist's conflicts and sometimes creates and/or transfers the author's problems. states" (Freud1). Holden is his problem. He has the opportunity to put the past behind him, but instead chooses to let it affect his future, which causes him problems as he approaches his academics by failing, ago. ..... middle of paper...... hurt him deeply and horribly throughout his childhood years. Even his education doesn't seem to matter to him, he thinks that as long as he can get ahead in life, he won't need school .Therefore, Holden brings all the stress and depression not only to himself, but also to his loved ones of Holden is already very sick and finding out that her son didn't go to school because he was expelled will almost kill her. She has so much to make up for in her life, and she needs to actually do it, not just waste her life on alcohol and cigarettes Psychoanalytic theories apply to Holden because he needs to become a better person and become someone he wants to be because his flaws can be corrected..
