Although it is a tool for learning, listening is a learned skill that many people lack. Of course, that's not the only way to learn. Some people who cannot hear speak sign language. Hearing is just part of another form of communication. When I was in school I was taught to listen first. The reason teachers say this is so you can pay attention and have minimal questions, because you were listening, not just listening to the teacher. When you give someone your attention, you show that you are listening and this is definitely noticed. It's also important to listen when you're at work and at home.
