The Lottery is a short story about a town that still participates in the annual "Lottery" drawing. Everyone laughs and converses like any other day. Both children and adults collect stones. Finally it comes time to draw and Mr. Summers takes out the black box with the papers inside. The head of the family, the men, all have to take out a piece of paper. Citizens talk about how the lottery is organized in nearby towns, but others like Old Man Warner scoff at the idea and say it's not possible, young people don't know what they're talking about, the lottery will continue in this town. The drawing begins and everyone around waits to find out who pulled out the dreaded slip of paper, and it was pulled by Tessie Hutchinson. She tries to avoid being killed and also calls attention to her daughter by saying that she should draw from the box too.
