The Corn Laws Debate was very controversial during the Industrial Revolution, because at that time there was the transition from what was the era of mercantilism to liberal ideas and visions towards structure economical. The issue with the Corn Laws was that it limited agricultural imports (Cohn, pp. 7). This law illustrates the conflict between mercantilism and liberal economic ideologies; unlike liberal economic views, corn laws under mercantilism favored large landowners despite being based on power and wealth. Their main goal in mercantilism was to gain economic independence, where their main concern was the interest of the state, instead of cooperating with others, which clearly contrasts with liberal economic views such as trade. Mercantilism faded after the repeal of the Corn Laws and allowed the emergence of liberal economic views on the international trade scene.
