In today's world, many employers also look at social media sites to determine whether to hire a person. Additionally, after hiring, a person's boss can fire them based on what was said or imagined on social media. College prepares you for the real world. That's why it's important to learn early that there are consequences for your actions, including your social media posts. In “The World is a Text,” the audience is told that we are always trying to read and make sense of our surroundings. This is called a "semiotic situation" (Silverman, Rader, 2012, p. 5). Semiotic situations interpret signs or texts and then try to make sense of it all (Silverman, Rader, 2012, p. 5). Whenever a person looks at Facebook, Instagram or any social media site they are in a semiotic situation. When you check a person's Facebook page, you are immediately evaluating who that person is based on what they post and what their photos are. This means that everything you post will also be judged. This is important to keep in mind when applying to schools. What if the person looking at your posts and photos is a college professor or works in admissions at the school you want?
