In international business, having the right leadership skills and the right approach is important to ensure success. Whether it's an entrepreneurial venture or managing a business organization, skills can be slightly different based on culture. There are several theories on approach and skills, but they all agree that cultural intelligence and adequate education are important for all global leaders. At Texas A&M University, they conducted a study to see if the programs and theories they offer are preparing leaders to become competent global leaders, based on the skills that Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) has determined are necessary for global leaders. In the A&M study, they concluded that while they teach theories of transformation and charismatic leadership, style approaches, both task- and relationship-oriented leadership behaviors, are not universally endorsed as effective theories (Muenich, et al., 2013). The definition of leadership according to GLOBE researchers “is an individual's ability to influence, motivate and enable others to contribute to the effectiveness and success of organizations. Many of these traits can determine leadership style. In a research paper conducted by Industrial and Commercial Training in 2013, researchers defined it as hard leadership versus soft leadership. In tough leadership, the leader is more focused on tasks and pressure rather than persuasion and transforming people.
