The late 18th century and early 19th century were an important time when the French Revolution and the Haitian Revolution occurred. Both revolutions were linked together in such a way that they shared similar causes and consequences. Together, France and Haiti were angered by the inequality and unfair privileges that continued to appear in their societies. At the same time, they were inspired and hopeful to translate the ideas of the Enlightenment into reality. Although they managed to accomplish much of what they fought for, such as the abolition of slavery, they still took part in bloody revolutions. However, one of the major differences in their results was that France emerged as a firm new government while Haiti faltered with its newfound independence. In September 1791, France carried out the liberation movement and outlawed slavery. In turn, Haitian slaves were inspired to do the same by rebelling against French plantation owners. This transformation movement of 100,000 slaves was led by Toussaint L'Ouverture; unfortunately he died before experiencing Haiti's separation from France in 1804. However, along the way to the success of both revolutions, there came a toll in terms of numerous lives lost. The Reign of Terror in France was created as a way to protect the republic from its internal enemies, but instead 16,000 people were guillotined. Many documents have been shown to describe the Reign of Terror's execution as gruesome and unjust, so much so that JG Milligen stated, "The execution process was also a sad and heartbreaking sight," in The Revolutionary Tribunal. Milligen continued to describe the vivid execution scene, but this was only one event and many others died with the fall of the Bastille and the attack on the royal palace. Haiti also lost many lives due to revolutions, especially in slave revolts and battles with French soldiers sent by Napoleon. Furthermore, the leader of the Haitian revolution L'Ouverture died in captivity in France. Both of these revolutions were known to have successfully achieved their goals, but their process was chaotic and unstable
