Charles was a very kind, kind-hearted, caring and polite man even though he did not have the love, care and support of his beloved mother. Charles was the eldest of the children and therefore did not receive as much attention from his mother as he would have liked. His brother GL, being younger than him, received maximum affection and attention from his mother. Charles being the oldest received the harshest and most severe punishment even though both he and GL had done something wrong.'” If GL and I had done something wrong. first you would beat me and then you would be too tired to beat him,'' just as explained in the quote from the text, GL and Charles' mother would not beat GL because she would waste all her energy and strength in beating Charles. Charles was tired of GL getting everything from his mother, so he decided to leave her at an early age, as stated in the story, "Chig's father had left home when he was fifteen." (182) Charles left home, but still went on to become a doctor that people felt comfortable with. He also had a family and a boy named Chig. Charles may not have had the support and love of his mother, but he still became someone in life and accomplished many things on his own. Overall Charles decides to leave his mother and earn his own living
