A director of nursing in a hospital organization is the leader of all nurses employed in the healthcare institution. He or she is appointed by the governing body or a group of shareholders of the agency according to criteria established by the policies of the organization, as well as in congruence with the nursing law applied in the state or location. Through education and management experience, a registered nurse is assigned an administrative position where he or she can facilitate the implementation of the organization's mission and vision statement to its staff. The nursing director also works with the medical director in terms of implementing policies and procedures which involves collaboration between a nurse and other members of the health care team. He or she is involved in the planning phase of the entire organization. The director of nursing may be called the head nurse. Under his supervision, nurses have a representative in the administration. Since nurses make up the majority of healthcare personnel employed in a healthcare institution, they deserve to have a well-motivated leader and mentor in the person of a nursing director.
