Topic > Edgar Allan Poe 'Annabel Lee': A Study in Persona and...

“Annabel Lee” revealed such a heartbreaking yet beautiful love story between a boy and a girl. Their love was more powerful than that of those who were older and much wiser than them, so much so that even the angels were envious of their relationship. And this was why the wind froze and killed the beautiful Annabel Lee. Because of the love so strong, everything remembered the person of Annabel Lee, including the moon and stars as she lies beside her grave. Throughout the poem, the study will focus on the person and the metaphor. The persona played a vital role in the poem where the poet uses it to provide perspectives on life or worldviews. Generally, the persona is a “mask” that the poet uses to create the speaker of a poem. In this poem, Poe made it clear that the character is the lover of a young maiden named Annabel Lee. In the first stanza, from line 1 to line 6, their love story was compared to a fairy tale in which both young lovers lived in a kingdom by the sea. “It was many and many years ago, in a kingdom by the sea, that there lived a maiden whom you may know by the name of Annabel Lee; and this maiden lived with no other thought than to love and be loved by me. “However, the mood of the poem changed when Annabel Lee died from a terrible disease The tragedy led to a transition of the character's character from someone who was hopelessly into a broken-hearted man, illustratively from the sixth stanza, line 34. at 41. "Why the moon never shines, without bringing me dreamsOf the beautiful Annabel Lee; and the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes of the beautiful Annabel Lee; and so, all night long, I lie beside my treasure, my darling, my life, and my bride, in her tomb. there in the middle......middle of the paper......their point of view on life or the world while metaphor is commonly used to show between two things that are contradictory but have the same meaning so make the description more powerful. Edgar Allan Poe had successfully used two of these literary elements which made Annabel Lee the epitome of good poetry. ReferencesHorn, J. K. (2013). About the Poetry Archive: What is great poetry?
