Some researchers and parents worry that these programs have a negative effect on teens' actions and how they perceive what is happening in the world around them. Many people believe that reality shows glamorize teen pregnancy. According to Los Angeles psychologist Nancy B. Irwin states that: “The teenagers who appear on these shows also appear in magazines and appear on other shows where they talk about their children, upcoming marriages, and their families in general. Putting teen moms on magazine covers "Puts them on the same level as any actress, singer or other celebrity." (page 1). Viewing teen mothers as famous celebrities gives those teens who are not experiencing pregnancy a distorted view of what it means to be a first-time parent. A study conducted by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy found that 93% of program viewers believed becoming a parent for the first time was more difficult than it appeared on national programs.
