Being in my Counseling 110 class has taught me that there is more to my life than high school. I learned that I have to separate myself from high school and I have to learn to be more of an independent person and control my own life. According to Eric Hoffer on page 14 of On Course, “In a time of drastic change, it is students who inherit the future.” I have learned that to be successful in my life I need discipline, responsibility and motivation to survive in real life. The first thing I need to apply to my life is self-discipline. I need it in my life because without it I wouldn't want to do any of the difficult tasks and do straight tasks. An example is that during my first two semesters here at Palomar College I always want to relax by being on the computer, XBOX, and hanging out with my friends instead of doing the most important thing, my homework. Self-discipline is defined as the act of disciplining or the power to discipline one's feelings and desires with the intention of improving oneself. In the fourth chapter Henery David Thoreau states that “it is not enough to be busy… the question is: what are we busy with? To be successful in self-discipline you need to have the perseverance to finish college to get a degree so you can become a nurse or special education teacher. One way to do this is to not just think of one way of doing things, because if you can't do it there are always other ways to complete that task. During my senior year of high school I decided that I wanted to join the Cross Country team. After the second week of training I pulled my hamstring and was unable to continue training and couldn't go to the doctor. I really wanted to stick with the mid-paper goal when I'm stuck in college trying to pass classes. Carlo j. Givens states in chapter three that, from his experience, there is no doubt that the speed with which you are able to achieve your goals is directly related to how clearly and how often you are able to visualize your goals. I discovered my dream a few years ago of becoming a nurse while watching "Tramam: Life in the ER" a television program that follows doctors around different hospitals as they are treating patients who arrive by walking in or by ambulance. I see myself completing my goal in a few years and will have the opportunity to achieve my goals of becoming a nurse. My Counseling 110 has taught me to look forward in my life and find the goals I want to achieve by separating myself from my goals myself from high school and trying to move forward and achieve my goals.
