According to the DSM-IV, schizophrenia is classified under the section "Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders". Schizophrenia is one of the most serious chronic brain disorders in the mental health field; is a neurological disorder that affects the cognitive functions of the human brain. People living with this disabling disease may experience multiple symptoms that will cause extreme stress in their lives and the lives of their family and friends. The individual may lose reality, be unable to work, have delusions and hallucinations, disorganized thought and language processes, withdraw from people and activities, become suspicious and paranoid, behave inappropriately in everyday social situations. They may neglect personal hygiene, dress inappropriately, wear excessive makeup; everyday life is becoming chaotic for everyone involved. This article will explore a video case study of Gerald being diagnosed with schizophrenia; in this film, viewers are exposed to the reality of what it's like to live with this debilitating disease and will explore different therapeutic ways to interact with and help a patient like Gerald. My patient Gerald, according to the video, is diagnosed with a textbook case of schizophrenia. He shows paranoid thinking and his speech is disorganized, his thoughts are loosely connected and he has formed delusions, he shows mood disorders and disordered behavior (Schizophrenia: Gerald, Part 1). The goal for Gerald is multifactorial; First, it is important to contextualize the fact that Gerald's schizophrenia is refractory to pharmacological management. Due to Gerald's complex presentation of multiple symptoms, the focus of interaction is improved... middle of paper... therapeutic ways to interact with a client. Overall, I believe I am capable and willing to work with patients like Gerald, but I also realize that I must continue to educate myself, keep up with the ever-changing management of the disease and treatments.
