Young men, women and girls are all at risk of contracting this disease. In 2000, 25% of people involved in the sex trade had some form of venereal disease, traders did not care whether their sex slaves received medical treatment or not. Contracting these diseases not only affects various individuals but also affects the economy of a country. As the number of people contracting STDs increases, so do the costs for medical needs. These diseases spread even to young children, which takes away future lawyers, doctors and teachers from third world countries. As a result, these countries are left without future professionals who could help improve their countries (Shelley, 2010). Another long-term effect that can result from being a victim of the sex trade is long-term drug use. Victims are often given drugs in order to perform, which ultimately turns them into drug addicts. Even if victims exit the sex trade, they are often still haunted by past arrests
